Safar is a Beirut-based independent magazine of design and visual culture. It is a bit like our window on the cultural and artistic ferment that silently crosses the Middle East.
Founded by the Studio Safar agency, in each issue artists, writers and designers are invited to explore a different theme.
"Safar" in Arabic means travel and in this case refers to the exploration of notions of communication, in particular across disciplinary, cultural and linguistic boundaries.
Safar was created to remedy the scarcity of critical writing on design in the southern hemisphere and aims to recognize designers as active agents of cultural production.

ISSUE VI - POWER
In the sixth issue, Power, Safar explores the commodification of academia as forms of assessment multiply and students around the world stare at computer screens; examines the broad cultural and environmental narrative that Hezbollah has cultivated in Lebanon and beyond; discusses the process of dismantling the racist and colonial power structures in US institutions; shares artifacts that trace the long and complicated history of Lebanon's electricity shortage; consider the revolutionary potential of Palestinian printed material and more.
